Bessie Elizabeth O'Donnell Bacon, 94, of the Donald community in Long County, Georgia, passed away quietly Sunday morning, June 1, 2014 in the Evans Memorial Hospital under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was the daughter of Thomas and Jemima Stanfield O'Donnell of Tattnall County, born December 4, 1919. She attended Dinner Branch School and was a member of Pigott Branch Baptist Church. She lived in Long County after her marriage for many years before moving to Darien and back to Donald fifteen years ago. She was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and friend to many.
Bessie is preceded in death by her parents, husband Archie Lee Bacon, daughters Ouida Nell and Marilyn Kay Bacon, daughter and son-in-law Susie Lee and Fred McKenzie, son and daughter-in-law Tommy and Patsy Bacon, son-in-laws Julian Howser and Harlon DeLoach, granddaughter Crystal Gail Martin and grandsons Robert Wade Martin, Franklin "Punkin" Brantley and half-brother Johnny Stanfield.
She is survived by her daughters Josephine Howser and Helen (Jerry) Hammer of Ludowici, Margie (Gene) Love and Lois (J. W.) Martin of Glennville, Hazel (Roger) Todd of Allenhurst. Also 14 grandchildren: Jo Anne (David) Moody, Fred McKenzie, Lee (Melba) and Leslie (Mandy) Bacon, David (Joyce) and Bruce (Edith) DeLoach, Paula (Gregg) Higgins, Steven (Lydia) and Jason (Beth) Todd, Sarah (Jeff Hein), Jamie (Rachel) and Steven Martin, Jerry Lee (Anna) and Michael (Carrie) Hammer, 27 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews and special relatives Sally and Harold Moody.
Fishing was once her favorite hobby. She loved talking to anyone on the telephone and keeping up with all the local news by reading five local weekly newspapers. Her all time favorite collection was a huge scrapbook filled with obituaries placed in alphabetical order. Cocoa, her adopted dog, provided many hours of pleasure to her in the last few years.
Special thanks to Mary of the Long County Senior Center, Tender Care Home Health Care, Dr. Paul Thompson and Staff, and Ogeechee Area Hospice. The family owes a huge thanks to her daughter, Helen Hammer, who was her fantastic and loving caregiver for almost three years.
Visitation will be held at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville, 6-8 PM, Monday, June 2, 2014. Funeral services will be held at Pigott Branch Baptist Church, 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 3, 2014 with Reverends Brian Anderson and Robert Long officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery. Singers will be Steven Todd, Rev. John Hubbard and Rev. Robert Long.
