Mrs. Betty Jane (Moody) Smith, 77, of Jacksonville Florida, passed away on May 17, 2015 at Community Hospice of NE FL. She was born in Glenville, Georgia on May 27, 1937, to Fred and Ruby Moody, and attended school at Glennville High School where she played on the Georgia State Champion basketball team and served as homecoming queen. She married Sgt. Charles L. Smith, USAF, on February 7, 1955, and together they had five children, all boys, and were married for over 50 years. They lived a military life that moved them from Montgomery, AL to Valdosta, GA to Jacksonville, FL to Laredo, TX and finally back to Jacksonville, FL. During that time, besides raising her boys, she worked as a kindergarten teacher, a beauty consultant and bookkeeper for the architectural firm of RS&H. At the time of her death, Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, where she had attended Sunday School and sang in the Chancel Choir.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, SMSgt. Charles L. Smith, USAF (ret), and her first born son, Charles L. Smith, Jr.; her brothers, Gene Moody and Robert Moody.
She is survived by her sons, Rev. Gary H. Smith (Sharon), Larry G. Smith and Joseph L. Smith (Darlene), nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a sister, LaJuan Miller of Slidell, LA and a brother Col. Donald Moody, USAF (ret) of Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 20, 2015 in Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church of Glennville, GA with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Betty will be laid to rest adjoining her loving husband in Beards Creek Church Cemetery following the service.
