Birdie Tootle

Birdie Thompson Tootle, 89, passed away May 28, 2014 at Glenuve Nursing Home surrounded by her family and friends. Birdie was born on June 25, 1924 in Glennville to Henry Marvin and Gracy Hallman Thompson and lived in Glennville all of her life. Birdie was one of seven siblings, and a 1942 graduate of Glennville High School. She married Wilton A. Tootle on September 12, 1942. Birdie was a familiar face in downtown Glennville for many years working first at Union Dry Goods, and in 1973 she began working at Lipsitz's Department Store with her brother H. D. Thompson and nephew, Dorsey Thompson. She was an avid gardener, professional seamstress, and quilter. She made quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; as well as other family members. Birdie loved the public and spent her life in service to others. She was a long time member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gracy and Marvin Thompson; her husband, Wilton A. Tootle; three brothers: H. D. Thompson, Pete Thompson and Parker Thompson; two sisters, Donna T. Godwin and Lothair Thompson.
Survivors include:
Children: Brenda (John) Durrence, Alex (Donna) Tootle, and Kimi (Dana)
Hammock, all of Glennville
Sister:Alma T. Kicklighter of Glennville
Sisters-in-law:Jane Thompson of Glennville, Allonia T. Ginn of Savannah
Grandchildren: Brent (Roxanne) Durrence, Al (Melanie) Durrence, Gracy (Jeremy)
Dykes, Lori (Jonathan) Dutton and Katie (Cal) DeLoach
11 Great-Grandchildren also survive.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 am, Saturday, May 31, 2014. Memorial Services will follow at 11:00 am at Brannen-Kennedy Chapel. Burial will follow at Watermelon Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
