Charlotte King

April 8, 1940 — February 25, 2021

Charlotte Luke King, age 80, died Thursday, February 25, in Appling Healthcare, Baxley, after a short illness. She was born April 8, 1940, to Charles Pendleton Luke and Eula Mae Canuet Luke in Savannah, Georgia, but was a life-long Glennville resident.  She held a Bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and a Masters degree and a Sixth-Year teaching certificate from Georgia Southern University.

An educator in the Tattnall County school system who retired in 2013, Mrs. King taught English for over 50 years at the junior high and secondary level. She was named Teacher of the Year at Glennville Middle School, STAR Teacher at Tattnall County High School, and in addition to her teaching responsibilities she was regularly the yearbook advisor.  Most significantly, Mrs. King was an enthusiastic supporter of the athletic program at Tattnall County High School and was held in special regard by the Lady Warrior softball and Warrior baseball teams, for whom she operated the scoreboard. In her retirement she volunteered in the school library a few hours each week.

Mrs. King was a lifetime member of Glennville First Baptist Church and was active over the years as a Sunday School teacher, in Vacation Bible School, and was a regular Family Night Supper volunteer, but her legacy there rests with her work with the youth program for many years, chaperoning trips with husband Ken.

Watching sports of almost any kind on tv, and in person until unable, topped her list of personal interests. That was followed very closely by her love of reading and she was likely one of the most active patrons of the Glennville Public Library.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Kenneth King, her children Sara (John) Pilger of Decatur, GA, Jane (Tyron) Joyner and Chris King of Glennville, sister Jane Luke Moss of Greensboro, GA, grandchildren Eric (Karalea) Pilger, Brendan (Stephanie) Pilger, Nick Pilger, Luke (Taylor) Joyner, Jessica (Ryne) Huggins, and great grandchildren Jacob and Oliver Pilger, Clara Jean Pilger, Charli Grace Joyner, and Kallen Huggins.

A public graveside service is planned for Sunday, February 28, at 2 p.m. at Glenville City Cemetery, with social distancing requested. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested for Glennville Public Library, Tattnall County Booster Club, and First Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be son Chris King, son-in-law Tyron Joyner, grandsons Brendan Pilger, Nick Pilger, and Luke Joyner, and grandson-in-law Ryne Huggins.

Social distancing of six feet due to Covid 19 will be enforced and masks are asked to be worn on all services.

Care and services are entrusted to Brannen Kennedy Funeral Home of Glennville, Georgia.
