Obituary for Henry S. O'Neal
Glennville: Mr. Henry Slater O'Neal, 84, died October 4, 2011.
Mr. Henry O'Neal was born in Tattnall County, Georgia. He was educated in the Glennville School System and graduated from Glennville High School in 1945. He served in the United States Army with service in the European theater of Operations, reaching the grade of Sergeant. After leaving the service he was a V.F.W. member of post 8379 for approximately 60 years. He was a member of the Glennville First Baptist Church. He served in many capacities of the church during his life. One of his greatest joys was serving as the cook for many activities for his church family and friends. He was also famous for his homemade barbeque sauce that he shared with many friends throughout his lifetime. He also enjoyed helping Wayne Dasher with the annual Law Enforcement Supper. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed many, many years of hunting and fishing with his lifelong friend, Max Smith and "the boys" David and Daniel Smith. Henry always took pleasure in helping others by working on such projects as his "Santa Bikes" for underprivileged children.
He was employed at Fort Stewart for approximately 37 years, retiring in 1983, from the Transportation Motor Pool as Transportation Motor Officer. During his time he received numerous awards for outstanding service, provided transportation support for the Post Administrative Operations and supplying support for troop training of Army and National Guard.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Uldine Thrift O'Neal. Also preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Veda O'Neal and sister Betty O'Neal McGowen.
He is survived by two daughters, Peggy O. Anderson and Jeannie and Ed Nelson of Glennville. Also surviving are, grandchildren, Neal and Cindy Anderson, Gena Anderson, Ashley Nelson, Olivia Nelson and Josh Powell all of Glennville, Laura and Will Maybin of Reidsville, four great-granddaughters, Hanna, Ella and Milli Anderson of Glennville and Annalee Maybin of Reidsville. One sister, Lettie O. Ray of Jacksonville, FL, two brothers, Billy and Winona O'Neal of Glennville and Bobby and Jackie O'Neal of Hinesville, and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a special companion, Rosemary Kitchens of Sylvania, GA.
Visitation will being at 6:oo PM on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville, GA. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Glennville, GA on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 10:00AM with burial in Glennville City Cemetery.
