Henry Stubbs

Henry Cliffton Stubbs Jr., 85, passed away Monday, December 13, 2010 at Evans Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 30, 1925 in Jacksonville, Florida, the eldest son of Henry Cliffton Stubbs Sr. and Danella Dasher Stubbs. "Cliff" graduated from Glennville High School, Class of 1941, the youngest member of his class. He attended Oglethorpe University in Atlanta until the outbreak of World War II, at which time he accepted the call of duty from his country and was called by the draft board and inducted on October 27, 1943. Cliff landed on the Anzio Beachead in Italy on May 30, 1944 on his 19th birthday. He served in the Italian Campagne and was one of the Liberators of Rome on June 5th. On July 8th that same year, He was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his heroic service in Italy. He remained in Italy until after the surrender of all the German Troops, about 500,000 in number. He remained in Italy and returned home a decorated war hero in August of 1946, as a Master Sergeant.
He was married to Joyce DeLoach on December 1, 1946 in Glennville, Georgia and after a short honeymoon he worked toward a career and raising his family of five sons.
Cliff was a deeply religious man, a Bible study teacher, deacon of his church, Director of the Primitive Baptist Bethany Home, the Lighthouse Foundation and Co-Chairman of the Southern States Bible Conference. He was a charter member of the Glennville VFW Post #8379 and active with the American Legion Post #95, the Jaycees and a member of Optimists International.
He retired from his career of 28 years with Georgia-Pacific and relocated to his hometown of Glennville, GA in 1981.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elder & Mrs. H. C. Stubbs Sr.; sister, Janelle Durrence; brother, Francis Stubbs; and son, Paul Anderson Stubbs.
