Jimmy Barnes McCurdy died on July 18, 2022 at the age of 84 at his residence in Glennville. He was born in Glennville on November 15, 1937 to William and Virginia Glanton McCurdy and lived most of his life here.
Jimmy graduated from Glennville High School in 1955. He continued his education at South Georgia College and later transferred to Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering in Marietta, GA (now part of Kennesaw State University), graduating in 1960 with a civil engineering degree.
Following graduation, Jimmy went to work with the GA Highway Department in Atlanta. His first job was with the Office of Materials and Testing located on the Georgia Tech campus, testing materials used in construction and highway maintenance. Jimmy enjoyed his career with the Dept. of Transportation from 1960-1974 and made friends all over the state. He supervised roads and highway construction projects throughout Georgia.
Jimmy married Janis Anderson McCurdy in 1967 and had two children, Lee Glanton McCurdy and Lisa McCurdy Barry. He had eight grandchildren. His family was his greatest pleasure.
On July 1, 1974 Jimmy McCurdy and Robert Anderson, his brother-in-law, purchased The Supply Company in downtown Glennville. After Robert’s death in 1979, Jimmy and Janis ran The Supply Company. Jimmy proved himself as successful business man and especially enjoyed talking to his customers and his employees. He supported other local businesses as well as the local schools. Many students began their first work experience at The Supply Company under Mr. Jimmy’s laid-back guidance.
Jimmy was a faithful Christian. His unwavering faith carried him through difficult days following the death of his wife, son, and grandchildren. His steadfast faithfulness has been an inspiration to many. He was a charter member and Elder of Cornerstone Bible Church and his church has been a major part of his life. He fully supported his church in every way. He served on the first church building committee, again on the construction of the sanctuary, and other significant projects. His church family loved him and has greatly missed him when his health prevented his attendance.
Jimmy was involved in civic activities. He was a charter member of Glennville Rotary Club and a member of the Glennville Bank Board of Directors.
