Kate Hodges Mitchell, 77, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 25, 2012. Born in Glennville, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Jimmie and Eugene A. Hodges. She was preceded in death by her sister Jean H. Schermock and her step-mother, Lois A. Hodges.
Kate is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Joseph W. Mitchell and their daughters, Katie Purvis (Kenny) of Glennville, GA; and Leslie Aleman (Eric) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; grandchildren Maria, Eric and John Aleman and Emily Purvis; sisters Marianne Britt of Smithfield, NC, Isilene Purvis (Jerrell), Beth Waters, Sandra Ray (Talmadge), Sherrie Wassan (Mickey) of Glennville, GA and Ann Purvis (Jimmy) of Savannah, GA; nieces Lara Smith (John) and Leigh Schermock of Jacksonville, FL; and her beloved dog, Molly.
After graduating from Georgia Teachers College in 1956, Kate moved to Jacksonville and began her career with the Duval County School System. She retired in 1989 after over 30 years at both Terry Parker High School and Arlington Junior High School. Upon retirement, she enjoyed traveling, golf, her grandchildren, and spending time with her family and friends.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 29, 2012 in Ponte Vedra United Methodist Church, with visitation 1 hour prior to service. Interment will follow in Glennville Memorial Gardens of Glennville, GA at 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ponte Vedra United Methodist Church, 76 South Roscoe Blvd., Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 or to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257.
