Margaret P. Herring
On Friday, July 22, 2011, Margaret P. Herring graduated from this earthly realm to the eternal. She spent her last days on earth surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many friends. Though her body had become weak and frail, her heart never wavered in the love she had for her family and her Lord.
Her story began on September 14, 1922, in Tarboro, South Carolina. Born to Clifton and Estelle Pruitt, "Dolly Girl" quickly became a Daddy's girl. Her parents instilled in her a faith that resulted in her receiving Jesus Christ as her personal Savior as a young girl while attending the Morningside Baptist Church. In high school she fell in love with a football star named James "Codfish" Herring, and often double-dated with their life-long friends, Jack and Helen Parker. James married "Maggie" on Christmas Day 1941.
Margaret worked for the American Red Cross for 13 years until her retirement in 1982, and then helped Dr. Cecil Hodges found the Coastal Pregnancy Crisis Center where she served as director for 25 years. James and Margaret were faithful members of Bible Baptist Church up until James went home to be with the Lord in October, 2002. At that time she shared her life with her children, and spent time living with them as the in-house advisor for her grandchildren.
But her influence reached far beyond her family, as attested by the many letters and emails during her illness. Not only did she touch tens of thousands of lives through her work at the Crisis Center, and also as director of the Lighted Pathway Sunday Department at Bible Baptist, but she became a mentor to hundreds of young women who desired a closer walk with the Lord and a stronger marriage relationship. She was a champion in the prolife movement and a faithful servant of Jesus Christ.
She is survived by five children: Judy Bruce and her husband Ed, Jimmy Herring and his wife Diana, Mark Herring, Dean Herring and his wife Susie, and Amy Green and her husband Mark. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
She was greeted on heavens shore by her loving husband James, her parents, her brothers (Wilmer, Frank and M.C.), her great grandson Josiah Lee, and a host of other family and friends. Our loss was heavens gain!
