Maxwell (Max) Smith, 89, died Wednesday night at his residence surrounded by his family and friends. The Toombs County native had lived in Tattnall County since 1953. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and served Tattnall County as County Extension Agent for 30 years. In his years as Extension Agent Mr. Max helped get the Vidalia Onion developed, grown, and promoted in Tattnall and Toombs Counties. He was known by the farmers in this area as the Soil Doctor where he was called on many times for his expertise. He was a former member of the Tattnall County Board of Education and a member of Georgia Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Glennville United Methodist Church and the Cowart Wesley Sunday School Class and served on various boards of the church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Jones Smith; sisters, Jacqueline S. Willcox and Alexis S. Wilkes

Brother-in-Law: Herbert Jones, Jr. (Kay) of Rincon, Georgia
17 Grandchildren, 6 Great-Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin Saturday, August 27, 2016, at 12:00 noon at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Rev. David Hibberts and Rev. Sam Wilder officiating. Burial will follow in Glennville City Cemetery.
