Mr. Paul Whitfield, 87, of Stillmore, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at Candler County Hospital.
Mr. Whitfield was born on August 27, 1932 to Mr. Bennett Dalton and Mrs. Mamie Lucus Whitfield in Stillmore, GA. After graduating from Emanuel County Institute in Twin City in 1949, Paul secured a job at Union Camp in Savannah. He attended Barnard and Anderson Church of God, where he met Jeanette Jackson. They were married at that same church in Savannah on January 28, 1951.
Years later, with a yearning to return to his roots, Paul began employment as manager of Perkins’ Poultry in Stillmore and returned to his hometown in 1959. He served as manager for many years and later purchased the business, which then became Stillmore Poultry. This business is presently operated by his son and grandson. Paul and his family have operated Little Chick Restaurant in Metter for over 40 years. In addition to his business interests, Mr. Whitfield also served as Mayor of Stillmore from 1966 to 1976 and as a member of the Argibusiness Council of Emanuel County.
Mr. Whitfield and his family attended Swainsboro Church of God for many years. Later he and Jeanette became charter members of Eastwood Church of God, where he served as trustee and church clerk for many years. Mr. Whitfield made the church and his family the center of his life.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Diane Whitfield; three brothers, B.D. Whitfield , Jr., Aaron Whitfield, and David Whitfield; and a sister, Mildred W. Grant.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeanette Jackson Whitfield of Stillmore; son, Wayne Whitfield (Linda) of Stillmore; one grandson, Blake Whitfield; one granddaughter, Alana Blair Whitfield (Travis); his devoted caregiver and manager of Little Chick, Mary Frances Archer of Stillmore, who has been like a daughter to him for many years. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Metter Chapel of Kennedy-Brannen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 2020 at the Metter Chapel of Kennedy-Brannen Funeral Homes. Burial will follow in the Stillmore City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be nephews: Bennett Whitfield, Jerrell Whitfield, Michael Whitfield, Josh Whitfield, Hunter Whitfield, and Tim Grant. Honorary pallbearers will include former church pastors.
Kennedy-Brannen Funeral Homes, Metter Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
