Parker Thompson

October 7, 1919 — February 16, 2013

Parker W. Thompson, 93 passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his family and under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. He was born in Tattnall County October 7, 1919 to Marvin and Gracy H. Thompson and lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a World War II Veteran serving as Sergeant in the Field Artillery in the Invasion of France in 1944. He was a member of the 4th & 16th Armored Division, 3rd US Army and under the command of General George S. Patton. He was in combat 281 days and was in the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne, Belgium, the crossing of the Seigfreg Line and the Rhine River. He was in the liberation of Nurnberg, Germany and several Prisoner of War Concentration Camps. He was wounded three times and awarded the Purple Heart with 2 clusters, The Bronze Star Medal, The Presidential Unit Citation, The Good Conduct Medal, The European Campaign Medal and The World War II Victory Medal. He retired in 1982 as the Division Manager of the Georgia Department of Veterans Services for over 35 years. He was a founding and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8379 and American Legion Post 95 in Glennville. He was a lifelong member of Glennville United Methodist Church and Cowart Memorial Sunday School Class. He is preceded in death by, wife, Marjorie A. Thompson, Parents, Marvin and Gracy H. Thompson, Sister, Donnie T. Godwin , Brothers, H.D. Thompson, and Ernest (Pete) Thompson.
He is survived by:
Children, Judy T. & Pete Blocker, Debby T. Burkhalter & Charles Block all of Glennville
Andy Thompson & Fiancée, Tricia Soileau of Grayson, Georgia
Sisters, Alma Kicklighter and Birdie Tootle of Glennville
Sister in Law, Jane Thompson of Glennville
Grandchildren, Danna (Jim) Demos, Christy (Wes) Hertz, Ellen (Joey) Cowart, Heidi (Neil) Deal, Russell (Kassie) Blocker, Patrick Burkhalter, Drew (Leah) Thompson, Zach Thompson.
13 Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM, Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Brannen Kennedy Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, February 18, 2013 at Glennville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Glennville City Cemetery.
