Ramon Antonio Moreno, 71, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2024, at his daughters' residence under the care of Gentiva Hospice.
Ramon Antonio Moreno, was born on October 11,1953 in Maricopa, Arizona, to Juan Bazan Moreno and Rosa Garcia Moreno. He was one of 16 children. Ramon was an active young man growing up. At a young age he would often spend his time working in the cotton and sugarcane fields to help out with the family. He also worked at the local grocery store after school. Ramon decided at a young age to enlist in the service shortly after high school. Ramon enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1973. His first active combat tour of duty was Vietnam. After Vietnam he toured overseas to places like Germany.
He would meet the love of his life through a pen pal service that was being offered to servicemen away from home. He was hesitant at first to write, but his buddy encouraged him to. Little did he know that he would be corresponding with his future wife. One evening while home on leave in Arizona after a little disagreement with his brother he decided to take a flight to Seattle to meet his pen pal. Her name was Lauretta Della Hauff, they had never met or seen what each other looked like. It wasn’t long into his visit that he knew she was the one. On April 10, 1976, they were married in Tacoma, Washington.
They would go on to have 3 children Lorie Lee Moreno, Della Rosa Moreno and Dorothy Marie Moreno. Ramon would decide to not reenlist in late 1979. He would move his family to Eagle Mountain, California where he would work at a mining company Kaiser Steel until its closing in 1982.
After going out to find a way to support his family he would rejoin the U.S. Army. Even though Ramon had previously served in the Army and was an E-4 when he got out in1979; he would have to restart his military career from the bottom as an E-1. Ramon’s first duty station would be Fort Hood, Texas where he would be assigned until 1984. Ramon was a motor pool mechanic and worked on tanks, five tons. Ramon would go on to quickly regain his rank and by the time he and his family were reassigned to Fulda, Germany in 1984 he was already an E-4. He would remain in Germany until 1988.He would move on to Schofield Barracks Hawaii where he would be promoted to E-5. Ramon would arrive at his final duty station assignment Fort Stewart/HAAF in October 1992. He would stay there until his retirement in 1998 retiring at an E-7.
Ramon’s oldest daughter Lorie would go on to marry Jackie Hamiliton Crocker Jr in 1994 and move to Fort Campbell, Ky until he went into the National Guard after active-duty service and moved back to Savannah in 2000; they welcomed 2 children Jackie Hamiliton Crocker III in 1992 and Amber Lee Crocker in 1995. Ramon’s youngest daughter Della would go on to marry her high school sweetheart Edward Ellis Jr and move to Fort Polk, La. until they moved back to Savannah in 1997; they welcomed 3 children Christopher Antonio Ellis in 1997, William Nathian Ellis in 2000 and Lee Edward Ellis in 2003.
Even after his Multiple Myeloma diagnosis in 2006 He always tried to stay positive and tried every experimental treatment that was available.
Ramon stayed active by helping out with the flower garden, helping his daughter work on her car, spending time with the grandkids/great grandkids and visiting with the neighbors.
Ramon and Lauretta would welcome their first great-grand baby Katherine Rose Williams in 2020, their 2nd Claudia Louise Ellis in 2021 and Alexander David Williams in 2024. He was better known to his grandkids and great grandkids as “Papa”. Ramon always made sure that he was the first one to introduce his grandkids and 2 of his great grandkids to Dairy Queen. Ramon and Lauretta would always make sure to be there for each when one was sick or in the hospital. They are and always will be 2peas in a pod. You would hardly ever see them apart.
