"S.E." Smith, Jr.
Solomon Ernest Smith, Jr., 92, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Johns Creek, Georgia. He was born September 27, 1926, in Tampa, Florida, to Sol and Sallie Kate Smith. Later the family moved and he adopted Glennville as his home. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and his wife of 64 years, Maderia S. Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Joan Ansley and son-in- law, Bill; two grandchildren, Trey Ansley and Shayna Bowen, the light of his eyes. He is also survived by four great grandchildren and many cousins.
He retired from the State Highway Department of Transportation after 30 years. He started his career working on bridges and when he retired as assistant district 5 engineer he was in charge of all bridges in district 5. Other highlights of his career was helping to implement what is now I-16, and his major responsibility was overseeing the building of the I-16 -I-95 interchange.
Mr. Smith served in the Pacific Theatre in WWII. He was shipping out when word was received that the atomic bomb had been dropped. Upon discharge from the Army in 1946 he joined the Georgia National Guard and retired after serving 30 years. After retirement, he started a third career as a gentleman farmer. Although he and Maderia moved to Johns Creek, GA, due to failing health, Glennville was still home.
Visitation will begin at 1:30 pm, Thursday, June 6, 2019 at Brannen Kennedy Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 3:00 pm, Thursday at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
