Virginia Tootle Smith, 88, went to be with her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, March 1, 2011after a long battle against Alzheimer's. The Tattnall County native lived in Savannah for many years and was an active member of Bull Street Baptist Church. She returned to the Glennville area in 1975 and was employed with Tattnall County Health Department for 13 years. Virginia loved her church, Glennville First Baptist, where she was very active until the time of her illness. She was a member of the Amanda DeLoach Sunday School class, and a former president of the Mission Action circle. Her passions were missions, especially the Lottie Moon Christmas offering for foreign missions and the Crisis Committee at First Baptist where she served faithfully for nearly 30 years as chairperson. She worked as a poll worker, and regularly visited patients at Glenvue Nursing Home before becoming a resident there. She was preceded in death by her husband A.M. "Buck" Smith, the father of her three daughters, Earl L. Malone, her parents F.M. Tootle, Sr. and Lee Purvis Tootle, sisters, Gwen T. Gilmore, Sabra Anne T. Smith and brothers Ned, Pat, F.M. and Max Tootle.
She is survived by her beloved daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Cheryl and Jim Robinson of Chattanooga, TN; Connie and Jimmy McNeely of Meldrim, GA; Lisa and Mitchell Smith of Glennville, GA. ; her seven grandchildren, who were the apples of her eye, Gini, Frank, Leigh, Ryan, Sharon, Tori, Trevor and their spouses, Leisa, Traci, Lindsay, Jeremy, Landon and Amanda; great-grandchildren: Madison, Sarah Beth, Anna, Landry, Molleigh, Jordan and Taylor with Ryleigh and Tucker on the way; brothers: Sam(Rose) Tootle, Jan(Gloria)Tootle both of Savannah, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
For the last several years her roommate at Glenvue, Hazel Lowery, was her best friend. Virginia was an extremely devoted mother and grandmother and made sure that her family enjoyed many happy times together that always delighted her.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral home in Glennville. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011 at Glennville First Baptist Church with Rev. Duane Fernandez and Rev. Mike Howard officiating. Burial will be at Loves Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary Pallbearers: John Cheney, Bert Oliver, David Holland, Danny Durrence, Dennis Odom, Jeff Odom, Troy Rahn, Vernon Dasher, Dennis Strickland.
